The summer is winding down and soon youngsters will be going back to school. The holidays seem to have flown by, and in no time the netball season will be gearing up a notch. Now is a great time to do some preparation so you can feel confident and on top of your game.
Step up the fitness
If you’ve had a break from your usual sport and fitness routine during the summer, start easing yourself back in with some light cardio such as skipping, cycling, or jogging. Some simple bodyweight exercises such as squats and lunges will also boost your strength and balance, helping to improve your agility and endurance and reducing injury risks.
Make sure your kit fits
If you’ve outgrown your current junior netball kit, it’s the perfect excuse to stock up with some fresh gear. Comfortable stretchy items such as leggings and vests will allow you to move freely on court, while a well-fitting pair of supportive trainers will protect growing feet and help you to perform at your best.
Practice some simple moves
If you’ve got access to outside space, it’s a good idea to practice some basic drills such as passing a ball (against a wall if you can’t recruit any team mates) and shooting at a target. Footwork techniques are also important, so go through what you know or look online for some refreshers.
Eat well and rest
Make sure energy levels are peaking by eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein, fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa or whole wheat bread. Rein in the late nights and prioritise sleep for a properly rested mind and body.
