Thousands of schoolchildren are showcasing their enthusiasm for sport by taking part in the Greater Manchester School Games.
More than 2,000 youngsters from the region took part in the event earlier this week, demonstrating their talents in 12 different sports, Manchester Evening News reported.
They got involved in 22 competitions as part of the games, which were held in venues such as the East Manchester Leisure Centre, Eastlands Indoor Track, the Armitage Centre, and the Belle Vue Leisure Centre.
Sara Tomkins, chief executive officer at GreaterSport, the charity that is in charge of running the games, told the news provider: “The event has showcased the strong values that our young people hold.”
She went on to say the youngsters also demonstrated important school games values, such as “passion, honesty, respect, teamwork, determination and self-belief”.
Children of all ages engaged in the activities, including those as young as six years old.
The event was the finale of the School Games, which has involved 80,123 children from the region over the academic year.
GreaterSport’s intention is to improve the physical activity of youngsters across Greater Manchester and make it the most active area of the country.
This comes after the minister for sport Mims Davies promised to increase female participation in sport, with the national average figure being just 26.4 per cent. According to GreaterSport, female participation in Greater Manchester is slightly higher at 28.6 per cent.
