Tips To Enjoy Your Netball Game Safely

Netball is a fun and fast paced game which is perfect for building up fitness, strength, and suppleness. It is also a great way to make new friends and develop good teamworking skills. To help you enjoy playing netball as safely as possible, and minimise the risk of accidents and injuries, there are a few simple points to bear in mind.

Warm up before you start

To avoid pulling muscles during the game, it is important to do a few warm up exercises first. This gets the blood flowing to the muscles, helping them stretch and flex more easily. Do some light cardio moves, such as lunges, leg swings, and ankle flexes, and shoulder rolls, to get loosened up and ready for more strenuous activity.

It is also a good idea to practice jumping and landing with soft knees, to help reduce the risk of strains and jarring of the joints.

Make sure you have suitable sports shoes

It is important to protect your ankle and knees joints from the pressures of jumping and running with good quality sports footwear. Make sure that your netball shoes are in good condition, fit you properly, and have some shock absorbance built into the soles. Your other clothing should be comfortable, well fitting, and not restrict your movement.

Remove jewellery before playing

It is recommended to remove all jewellery before playing netball, to avoid the risk of injuring yourself or other players that you come into contact with. This includes nose rings and earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches. Wedding and engagement rings, and medical bracelets can be kept on but should be covered with tape.

Fingernails should be kept short and smooth, to avoid scratch injuries. Long hair should be tied back out of the way.
