Netball players who want to do their best in matches might listen to what Helen Housby does before she takes to the court to improve England’s chances of winning.
The Vitality Roses player, who was recently in South Africa for the Netball World Cup, told Strong Women about her pre-match rituals.
She starts it the evening before by having a carb-rich meal that will provide plenty of fuel for the game.
On match day itself, she tops this up with a big breakfast and a coffee, followed by small sips of water to keep her hydrated.
Three hours before taking to the court, she has another meal that is full of carbohydrates, and a banana an hour ahead of the game.
“If I don’t have one, you’ll find me running around asking everyone if they’ve got one,” Housby revealed.
Fuelling herself properly is very important to the player, who also has a caffeine tablet, energy gel or sports drink right before she begins.
Rest is also essential for a successful result, which is why Housby likes to have a nap mid-morning, saying: “I find it’s really key for my recovery and preparing for a big game.”
She then tries to stay “quite chill” before the match, before getting her adrenaline going with some lively music and games with the rest of the team.
The Netball World Cup 2023 came to an end on August 6th, with Australia’s Diamonds taking the crown for the 12th time and England coming in second place.
Although they were not victorious, the Vitality Roses are likely to have inspired lots of young women to take up Putney netball lessons with their achievements, in hopes they could take part in the tournament one day.
